twenty years. a high school degree and an enrollment in a private university. learned a second language. the urge to learn at least two more. separated parents. a queer orientation, in both senses of the word. a really fucked up identity that i'm trying to figure out. optimism on tuesdays, wednesdays, and fridays. perhaps. no idea what i will do with my life but i will help people. a desire to get to know you and a fear of just the same.
George Whitman, the American-born owner of Shakespeare & Company, a fabled English-language bookstore on the Left Bank in Paris and a magnet for writers, poets and tourists for close to 60 years, died on Wednesday. He was 98.
“I wanted a bookstore because the book business is the business of life,” he once said.
